The most popular betting options tend to have negative odds. For example, most sportsbooks offer -110 on either side of a point spread or a total points line. It means you will not quite double your money if you succeed, so you need to win around 55% of your bets to generate a healthy profit.

An over-under (also known as Totals or displayed as O/U) is a wager in which oddsmakers will create a number based on how many total points they think will be scored in the game, and you’ll bet whether you think the combined final score will be over or under that number. For example, If the O/U for Team A and Team B is 47.5, you’ll need at least 48 points scored to win the over and a max of 47 points scored to win the under.

With sports betting on NFL games, people typically bet on the results of upcoming games—namely, who will win and who will lose. But you can make wagers on outcomes beyond the winner and the loser, such as the number of total rushing yards or which team will get the most sacks. NFL odds are determined by professional oddsmakers employed by the top sportsbooks. Online betting odds usually reflect what is determined by oddsmakers at the nation’s top casinos, many of which are in Las Vegas.

Totals—or over/under—betting is probably the simplest way to place a wager. The oddsmaker puts up a total score, and you lay down the stakes as to whether the total number of points scored by both sides during the game will be more or less than the posted score.

If you’re betting totals, and you’re probably seeing a pattern here, you’re betting on the total number of points scored. These bet types are pretty logically named, no? Anyway, if you’re betting on a Packers v. Bears matchup and the total is set at over or under 48.5, that means that oddsmakers don’t expect the cumulative score earned by both teams to exceed 48. If it does, and you bet the OVER, you get a payout. If it doesn’t and you bet the UNDER, you get a payout.

NFL line betting—also called moneyline betting—simply takes the spread out of the picture. In this case, the bookmakers adjust the payout to account for the lack of point spread. A moneyline sheet might look similar to this:
